What Is AcceleDent?

30 Sep 2015

Braces are a very effective appliance to straighten your teeth and give you a dazzling smile, but wearing them is generally not on the list of top fun things to do. You’ll be happy to know that there is a product that speeds up the brace-wearing time. It’s called AcceleDent. It is a hands free device that uses Micro pulse Technology to accelerate the rate of bone remodelling, which is critical for orthodontic tooth movement. The net effect: faster tooth movement and shorter treatment time.

What Does AcceleDent Do?

Your braces move your teeth to the correct position by applying pressure on them over a certain period of time. They actually reshape (or remodel) the bone surrounding the teeth to enable tooth movement. Scientific research has discovered that exposing the teeth and gums to high-frequency, gentle vibrations, speeds up this process. AcceleDent is a device that does just that.

How do I use AcceleDent?

AcceleDent is lightweight, and consists of a removable mouthpiece connected to an activator. Place the mouthpiece — which will fit around your braces — into the activator, bite down on it, and turn on AcceleDent. Do this every day for 20 minutes — using it longer than 20 minutes is not recommended. The activator sends gentle vibrations—micropulses— to the teeth and gums to strengthen the force applied by the braces, and accelerate tooth movement. Not to worry, there is no pain or discomfort. The sensation felt has been likened to that which occurs when you use your electronic toothbrush. And since the device is hands-free, you can do other things—read, watch television or use your computer— while using AcceleDent. What Are The Benefits Of Using Acceledent?

The makers of AcceleDent say that the device can make orthodontic treatment as much as 50% faster. They also say that the pulsing emitted by AcceleDent decreases the discomfort that is sometimes caused by wearing braces.

How Safe Is Acceledent?

AcceleDent has been approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) as a Class II medical device, which means it is subject to substantial regulatory control to provide assurance of the device’s safety and effectiveness. In 2013, Health Canada gave OrthoAccel Technologies formal approval to distribute AcceleDent to the Canadian market.

The trials done for AcceleDent showed no adverse effects on patients or tooth root damage. It is safe for patients of all ages, and it works in conjunction with most orthodontics. However, it does have to be prescribed by your orthodontist, and obtaining one without a consultation with your orthodontist is not advisable.

Why Should I Consider Using Acceledent?

Wearing braces will certainly give you a straighter, more attractive smile, but it’s good to know that you can now reduce the time you need to wear them by as much as half. If your treatment is supposed to last a year, AcceleDent will reduce it to 6 months— which means you will have that great smile that much sooner.
